Notes from the Farm

July 28, 2010

  • In late June we saw the end of a very long and wet spring. Many thanks to our dedicated employees and their families for their time and efforts this planting season!

  • Recent rains have improved the corn and beans. They are progressing nicely and the high heat days have put us back on schedule.

  • Soybean herbicide post-spraying is nearly complete, and we are beginning fungicide application where needed.

  • While out scouting corn, we saw quite a bit of disease pressure this year. Pressured areas have been sprayed with fungicide, and all applications are complete.

  • Mowing is still taking place on road banks, ditches and waterways. This task has been made more difficult by the saturated soils and standing water. All efforts are being made to get this task complete-- we take pride in making sure the fields are neat and clean.

  • Corn and soybeans are still being hauled to our end users, and we should have all our bins cleaned out and ready to go for the upcoming harvest. Our facilities employees have been working extremely hard in this heat and for that we are thankful!

  • Harvest will hopefully have an early start this year since we are ahead of schedule on growing degree unit's (GDU's). We are hoping for an early September start.

  • Enjoy the rest of summer. We hope it's filled with lots of family time, cookouts and delicious sweet corn! Stop by--we'd love to share some of ours!
